Anna of Austria was born on November 1, 1549 in the Spanish Netherlands (modern-day Belgium). She was the daughter of Emperor Maximilian II and his wife Maria of Spain. In 1570, Anna married her uncle, King Philip II of Spain, who was 20 years her senior.
As queen of Spain, Anna had significant influence on the political and social life of the country. She was known for her beauty and intelligence, and was a patron of the arts. Anna and Philip had five children together, including their son Philip III who would succeed his father as king.
Anna served as regent of Spain during the absence of her husband and son, and she played a prominent role in negotiations with England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. She also supported the Counter-Reformation, a movement to strengthen Catholicism in Europe.
Anna died on October 26, 1580 at the age of 30. Despite the short length of her reign, Anna was remembered for her intelligence, grace, and devotion to Spain during her time as queen.
